Concrete flooring in the large garage

Project name: Garage at a military unit

Technology: Hardened concrete flooring, Multitop® Enduro hardener, steel grey colour

Possible use: private little garage (home extension), large government-owned or company garage, or underground multi-storey car park

Area: 1600 m2

Large regularly shaped garage, is an ideal place to make the classic industrial floor. The pros: low cost per square meter and quick construction process.

Pros and cons: tiles vs rough concrete vs industrial flooring

You may think ceramic tiles are great for a garage or rough concrete is sufficient. However they both have advantages and disadvantages.

With ceramic tiles we need the cured slab (moisture had evaporated), that means waiting with freshly-laid slab. Then we need tiles and a tiler which make a separate expense. Tiles are therefore relatively expensive and take time to finish. They may be worthwhile however with small garages (100-200 m2), if we find a contractor slightly below market price. For larger areas tiles are hardly to be recommended.

"Ordinary" rough cement screed - while cost-efficient and practised in some not-too-intensively used interiors - rough concrete makes no solution for car repair facilities or warehouses with heavy forklift traffic. Even hobbyists will regret making rough concrete floors in their garages. Disadvantages: weak dust-proofness. Dropped hammer will chip rough concrete floor.

For garages we recommend industrial flooring, e.g. hardened concrete. Pros: will not dust, potentially heavier vehicles may be parked, chipping and flaking resistant. Cost - with areas 100 m2 and up - lower than with tiles. And the industrial flooring is quicker to build.

Colour

To be chosen from the palette. Greys are cheapest, but yellow or blue will merely increase the total. Cheaper colour might be noticeable with large scale aviation hangars or underground apartment building garages.

Maintenance

Leaks make major stain source in the garage. Thus, the concrete needs to be properly sealed and will be comparably resistant to the tiles, as far as stains and spots are concerned. We mean oils, coolants, brake fluids. Rough concrete screed will probably be weakest in this competition (unless sealed).

Redecoration?

Having a garage to be renovated? Consider Baufloor® industrial-class concrete screeds. To be distributed on existing concrete slab, the layer is only 8-15 mm thick. They look similarly to the floor pictured. Dust-proofness comparable to monolithic flooring.
