Chipped, pitted concrete slab repair

Repairing damage: pitted and chipped concrete slab

Filling pits in ice rink slab. In buckets mixed Terrafill® preparation for concrete surfaces, cement screeds and polished floors. Terrafill® may be applied to surface being repaired for over 10 hours after mixing.

Ice rink slab repair

Construction name: Outdoor ice rink

Technology: Terrafill® polymer-mineral solution based concrete slab repair

Facility use: town seasonal ice rink

Slab area: 900 m2

Year repair was completed: 2013

Outdoor concrete slabs tend to be put to the test. Especially in transitional climate, where freezing occurs daily. The situation gets even worse at places like the pictured - where  ice skates' blades bite into concrete. The concrete must be above-average watertight.

The ice rink completed in late 2008 needed redecoration only after 5 seasons. Terrafill® polymer solution had been chosen. The preparation is designed to be used on concrete surfaces, cement screeds and polished flooring. Repair mortars containing polymers are quite adhesive and seal concrete effectively. Read more on polymer concrete advantages.

Watertightness of concrete is crucial in a project like this - water must be prevented from soaking down the slab and blowing up when freezing. The better the watertightness, the more durable the surface.

Mortar adhesion made important factor as well. Popouts in concrete were modest in size and rather shallow.

Repair was initiated with grinding the slab with Klindex DT1 segments (rough grinding) and the surface carefully vacuum cleaned. After the mortar (supplied in two components) had been mixed, holes filling began, mainly with hand tools (putty knives and trowels). Repair was finished with Klindex DT2 finer stones grinding.

Have you got similar case and are not sure about reasonable repair method? Ask us for help. Each case is different. Fillings in concrete tend to come off with time, particularily those exposed to sun, snow, thawing and freezing.

Step 1. Concrete slab grinding. Foreman's helper follows with industrial vacuum-cleaner.

Pitted concrete

Abundant pits, caused by water freezing inside upper layer of the slab. Photo depicts concrete after initial grinding.

Scratched concrete

Scratched concrete - damage caused by ice skates' blades. Surface hardening proved to be insufficient for this intensive use.

Mixing repair mortar

Mixing components: polymer with mineral one just before application to the slab. Terrafill® is designed for various situations, like outdoor concrete slabs, indoor screeds, floors, walls, polished and troweled surfaces.

Extensive range of repair

How extensive the operation was can be seen on this picture. Whole 900 m2 had been worked out.

Concrete rake

On extensive damages concrete rakes were used to apply mortar.
